From Booklist
Maybe it's the logical progression of news media excess or the fact that self-absorbed baby boomers now run that media. Whatever the reason, the character of the first boomer president has received more scrutiny and instant analysis than any figure in history. Now Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maraniss offers a heavily documented (nearly 400 interviews), unauthorized biography that ends with Clinton's announcement for the presidency. Maraniss writes, "My goal was for this book to be neither pathography nor hagiography, but a fair-minded examination of a complicated human being and the forces that shaped him and his generation." He has achieved his goal. His portrait shows Clinton to be, like most public figures, a welter of coexisting contradictions--"considerate and calculating, easygoing and ambitious, mediator and predator." Maraniss writes that his research caused him to like Clinton even when he disliked him and to dislike him even when he liked him. All in all, First in His Class is solid journalism that thoughtfully evokes the tumultuous times--desegregation, assassinations, Vietnam--that shaped Clinton. Maraniss, of course, is also a boomer, but his scrutiny is more balanced and thoughtful than most. Thomas Gaughan

Review
Steve Neal Chicago Sun-Times First in His Class is a triumph of American political biography.

Jonathan Alter The Washington Monthly This is a first-rate political biography. To understand why the shorthand on this man [Clinton] is so insufficient, this book is essential.

Joan Duffy The Commercial Appeal Finally, a real book on Bill Clinton.

FIRST among Clinton Bios
By Lynn Foxx
As a Clinton fan, I read all of the bios and his autobiography. "First" remains my favorite because it details Clinton's evolution from a boy born into less than ideal circumstances with only 3 assets---an adoring mother, scholastic achievement and a singleminded goal to become president---to making the american dream come true. I recently purchased another copy for my nephew, who is shopping colleges. This is a must read for all who doubt the power of education to change your life not just for the better, but for the best.

Not Quite a First rate Perosn
By george sand
I never voted for Bill & never would despite his many assets. He is without any real integrity. Marraniss has written a greatly detailed bio of Bill from birth to his presidential nomination including all his childhood friends. Bill trained himself from early on to get as little sleep as possible because it interfered with all the work he constantly did to further his ambitions politically.. He never had any other interests outside of running for office..a man of great guile & charm. At Oxford after graduating from Georgetown, Bill made long lasting influential friends & had great conflict about getting out of the draft. Who could blame him for opposing the Vietnam war?
His mother adored both him & his worthless brother Roger (she actually thought Roger would become the next Elvis) His serial philandering with women was always there since Bill needed constant people to talk with & use in any way to further his political goals. When he was defeated after his first term as governor, Bill proved resiliant & learned from his mistakes. His marriage to Hillary is depicted, I thought, realitically. She was the money maker in their partnership & was straight as an arrow in her goals & didn't get side tracked like he did. It was a truly co-dependent relationship for both good & bad. Always arguing but unable to get along without the other.
Bill has a brilliant mind & his own narcisstic needs were his own downfalls. Virginia, Roger & Bill all went into therapy & while Bill understood some of his compulsive behavior he never stopped it.
Dick Morris figures strongly in this bio of Bill as a guiding character who did advise him correctly even though he was always a slimey individual.
Hillary comes out as the smarter & more disciplined of the two but lacking in his charisma. The book, like the bio of Obama that Marraniss wrote is documented with every trivia imaginable & that is why I found it tedious at times. But that is just my opinion. It is very well written. Because of reading this book I am now going to read A Woman In Charge since HRC may well be our next president. She wouldn't waste so much of her tenure as Bill did which was the saddest thing about his 8 years in office.

Thorough, evenhanded
By D. Brady
Like all of the other reviewers of 'First in His Class', I think that the author's treatment of Clinton is thorough, impartial, and largely nonjudgemental. The thoroughness, however, tailed off at the end of the book- the '80s get skimpy treatment. There is almost nothing in this biography about Whitewater, the McDougals, Gennifer Flowers, Madison Savings & Loan, etc- all of the alleged scandals from the '80s that have dogged the Clintons during his presidency. It seemed as if the author was in a hurry to finish the book once he described Clinton's first few political campaigns. One is struck from reading this biography how lucky Clinton has been, if his objective was to reach high political office (which it was, of course)- innately intellectual and gregarious, a natural 'schmoozer', avoiding the draft in 1969-70 (although, as the author makes clear, this involved a fair amount of creativity on Clinton's part), having a relatively small state as his political 'home base' (could he have been elected governor of New York with such ease?), , running for president against a weak and incoherent candidate in 1992, etc. Clinton's good fortune in reaching his life-long goal does not detract, however, from his political cunning ('the world's largest rolodex' is my favorite expression from the book) and overweaning ambition. Herein lies the recipe to being elected to high political office. Followers of the foibles of the Clintons the last seven years will be amused to see some of the contemporary weird characters that populate (or have populated) the Clinton administration first surface during Clinton's days in college, Oxford, and law school. Strobe Talbott, Robert Reich, Bernard Nussbaum- now we know where these chuckleheads came from!
