A must-read for Otto Rahn and Cathar buffs
By Victor E. Smith
While researching the web for information on the controversial German author and Grail hunter, Otto Rahn, I found a mention of Jeanne D'Aout's 2011 novel, White Lie, which included Rahn as one of its featured characters. I also learned that that the author was a resident of the Languedoc in southern France, now famous internationally for its long-buried Cathar heritage, an unveiling rightly attributed to the writings and explorations of Rahn despite his purported affiliation with Heinrich Himmler and the Nazi SS. I'd spent three enthralling weeks following Rahn's footsteps through that region in August 2010 and thus wondered how a Langedocian might portray, even if in fiction, the man revered by his fans as "the real Indiana Jones" and reviled by his detractors as "vrai Nazi et faux Cathar" (true Nazi and phony Cathar).
After reading the novel's description and watching the trailer, I ordered it from Amazon, more curious than convinced that I would learn anything new; poorly executed knock-offs of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code are twenty dollars a dozen these days. Prepared to be disappointed and put off by the superlatives in its cover claim (DISCOVER THE BIGGEST SECRET OF THE WESTERN WORLD...), I pushed my way past the breathless opening pace, the too-obvious time machine device, and the rapidly switching date/location subheadings into the story proper. Suffice it say that I got caught up in the flow and had a hard time putting the book down until its final page.
Combining some science fiction technique (time travel) with an intimate knowledge of the region and her subjects, Jeanne weaves a fascinating tale of intrigue that includes most of the key mysteries of Western Christian history from the characterization of Jesus himself to the interaction between Pope Pius XII and the Nazis during World War II. Once the reader is on the ride, he gets more comfortable with the necessary switches in time and place, although they call for some additional attention to survive such intense--and intentional, I think--gyration.
As someone who has done extensive research on Christian origins (my own novel, The Anathemas: A Novel about Reincarnation and Restitution is available on Amazon), on Otto Rahn and Nazi occultism, and on the Cathars and Templars in the 13th and 14th centuries, I can vouch for the depth and accuracy of Jeanne's research into her subject matter; at the same time, as a novelist, I acknowledge that she never allows the necessary introduction of facts and theory to interfere with the flow of the thriller, that damn good story that a reader can't resist.

Amazing book!

Great book! It grabbed me from the beginning to the end.
A real page turner with exciting treasure hunts. It's an historically rich story.
The author is an expert in both esoteric and exoteric matters.
It makes you think, and that is exactly the intention!

A very pleasant, exciting page turner
By Oposum in the Garden
A real thriller, which was thrilling, not dragging, interesting ideas, a real page turner, which surprised me, as this book wasn't heavy promoted or well known. Read like J.Rollins, quick action, etc. Shorter sentences, like in Rollins, give sense of immediacy.

Characters were not too well developed, but this is how it goes in this genre, most focus is on action. But the character of Otto Rahn was quite richly drawn, had depth and was really rich, as a tormented soul with bad past. There were some historical inancuracies, for ex. that church hunted down and killed scientists. Luckily it was not so, two scientists were suffering persecution, Giordano Bruno was burned on stake (for heresy, not for science), Galileo Galilei was in a house arrest. Bad enough, yet there was not a hunt for the scientists. But little problems with acuracies didn't bother me. Actually this read was more pleasurable to me than the Da Vinci Code, which stated that so much was true, and oh, don't forget "impecable research", and then you roll your eyes most of the time at innacuracies when you read it.

I didn't have such distraction here, in general a smooth read. Even got up during the night, couldn't fall asleep after reading this book to read more until 3 in the morning, great fun with this thriller! Such low price for this thriller, over 300 pages, it is a real deal, a very generous length for such low price.

Some sentences were a little bit odd, yes, mostly at the beginning, but the author is not native speaker of English, and I found it truly remarkable and even inspiring that she wrote something so nice, in such a difficult genre.

There is quite a number of not too well written thrillers by authors whose mother's tongue is English, so, I am not really complaining about this book, rather admiring. For ex. translation of The Last Cato: A Novel wasn't really great, but read was fine, The Celestine Prophecy: An Adventure was not great writing, but became a bestseller. White Lie maybe would need editing, but in general is quite an accomplishment. Enjoyed it more than The Expected One (Magdalene Line), or SOLOMON'S KEY THE CODIS PROJECT: A CONSPIRACY THRILLER, White Lie was more enjoyable, better crafted as a thriller, and even the Da Vinci Code isn't great literature, no need to go into details, actually I enjoyed White Lie, is somehow more authentic, but this is a matter of taste.

I hope for more from this author, (maybe more carefully edited), for sure she has a gift for story telling, knows how to use- but not overuse- the cliff hangers in her story, and has very interesting ideas. Thriller is not an easy genre to write, and this is a chase thriller, well done, chapeau bas!

And for this price, for over 300 pages, this is a very generous offer, it is a good deal.
