Barbara Ramusack is Charles Phelps Taft Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati. Her publications include Women in Asia: Restoring Women to History (1999), and The Princes of India in the Twilight of Empire: The Dissolution of a Patron-Client System, 1914-1939 (1978).

From political point of view, Barbara Ramusack
has overhauled and presented the relationship of the Indian
States to the United Kingdom. At the twilight of the British
Occupation, hundreds of Indian Princely States existed in the
Sub-Continent. They were neither directly ruled by Britain nor
part of the Empire, rather sort of vassal states. The author
looked into the paradigms that existed before and after the
independence in 1947.
However, this book is purely for the political use only.
There is no individual historical treatment of the Princely States
and it has limited value in terms of a complete survey of the
existing legal entities in India prior to 1947.
