Woodwork Joints

Woodwork Joints by Charles Hayward - the cover photograph here is quite different to the original I have. I bought the entire series by Charles Hayward in the 1960's whilst a student at Shoreditch College. Not only are these books the supreme definitive reference source for the best traditional hand practice (culminating in the 60's) but Hayward was a legendary illustrator and these books are still a visual feast and knock spots off modern CAD illustrations. I refer to these books in my teachings today. Woodwork Joints explores every conceivable variation of joint making and is a valuable legacy.

It's All in Here

This is an indispensible book to anyone learning to make joints -- from the simplest to the most complex -- using hand tools. "There is more useful information per page in this book than in any other woodworking book ever written." That's what Bob Lang, senior editor at Popular Woodworking, said about this slim volume, and he's got far more street cred than I. The book, written in easy to read prose, doesn't waste a word.

Ahmed's tragedy aligns with Bahrain's experience of the Arab Spring

This is a fantastic format for investigative journalism. I think of myself as a person who pays attention to the news, but struggles a little to keep track of the specific events in the Middle East. The Arab Spring sits in my mind as a set of dominos, one tipping another, but I have trouble remembering which domino is which and how it looks now.
Fortunately, now that I've read this book I can remember Bahrain and keep it straight from the others. The personal tragedy of Ahmed aligns well with the historical facts and perspective. Its a great story - though one with a sad and unfinished ending. As a teacher I'm encouraging my colleagues to use it in their instruction of the Arab Spring. Its length and approachability make it perfect for guiding students to understand the events of the past two years, as well the historical context.

Great Christmas Thoughts

My Dear Grandmother who passed away in 1999 at the ripe old age of 106 used to recite this poem, which she had memorized, every Christmas to the delight of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. My mother who is now 94 had also learned this poem and recited it around Christmas. I was delighted to find it in print and find it enjoyable and bringing back many good memories.

Christmas in another time

It would not seem like Christmas if we did not read this story at least once each year - usually on Christmas Eve. I am lucky to have in my possession an original leather bound copy with a hand sewn binding which was given to my grandfather by his Sunday School class when it was first published in the 1880's. It is a precious story. I can not speak for the kindle edition, as I have never purchased it, but I am very glad to see it is back in print again.

Pleasant surprise.

Spook isn't a classic hero. She's not out to save the world. In fact she doesn't like the world very much. What she wants is to go to the lunar colony that the metahumans have and the job she takes guarantees the money to get there. All she has to do is find a missing boy. Except it's not so simple as that. It turns into something much more sinister.

Spook did have a classic sidekick in the hero named Carpenter. Carpenter has an affinity with wood as his superhero name would suggest. He can communicate with trees and manipulate wood to do what he wants. He's also a prefect foil to Spook's cynical outlook. He's an idealist who believes that the world will always need superheros. Carpenter also believes it's their duty to protect the normals from villains and criminals alike no matter how society views him.

Quantra is a complex supervillain. He is multi-layered and has many facets to his character. His motives were manifold and varies, too many to really penetrate and delve into in one review. It gave the story a lot of dimension and depth. I became very invested in finding out what made him tick and what his true objective was.

The world the story takes place in is a contradiction in itself. It has rocket ships yet it doesn't have advanced computers. It has dirigibles and helicopters yet doesn't have things like cell phones. I found it intriguing and different. It gave it a Sam Spade feel with a technological or "steampunk" edge.

Don' t Be a Hero was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be as great as it was. I thought it would be passingly entertaining. Instead it captured me and held me in its grips. I wasn't completely sold on the concept of superheroes in a novel versus an action movie but I am now. I consider this book a win.

Surprisingly good - Don't be put off by the cheesy cover

All in all, a very pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting much when I bought it but, to my amazement, it was an excellent read. It's probably more of a four-and-a-half than a five but, hell, I got my money's worth which is (in my view) pretty unusual with a lot of 'hero' fiction.

No super-human story can truly be 'realistic' because the concept is intrinsically daft but this one came as close to plausibility as the genre allows. I certainly don't feel my time (or money) was wasted. I would even enjoy a sequel if the author feels the urge. I'd love to find out what happens to 'Sam' although, frankly, 'Spook' didn't interest me much; I don't understand how she survived the first chapter, let alone the entire book. Let's face it, turning into a shadow for up to three minutes isn't going to get anyone into the Justice League. She might make it into the Teen-Titans (if she was a bit younger) because they even let Robin in.

Note to author though: I've never heard a Yorkshireman refer to his father as 'Pa'. "Me Dad" would be more colloquial unless they've spent a lot of time on the Kent farm. Also, for the record, 'Quanta' could recharge himself by rubbing a bit of plastic on his hair or peeling of a strip of Sellotape. Both give of photons. (In a vacuum, peeling a strip of Sellotape actually gives off hard X-rays which is pretty freaky)

Definitely did not expect to like it that much

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, and this is one I really enjoy writing.

I really liked this book. I should say that I never read any classic superhero comic books so I cannot say if something in this book has been done before or not.

Personally, I really found it to be a quick and entertaining read. Spook is a lesbian superhero. Just that alone is cool. Why? Because even today only few authors dare to make their main character homosexual without centering the entire story around their sexual orientation. Chris Strange had the courage to move away from the classic gender role without making it a big deal in the story. We get to experience Spook's relationship with Gabby just like we would with any other relationship. Personally, I found that very refreshing and awesome.

While the writing itself isn't the most exceptional, I found it good enough to enjoy this book. The pace was just right, the characters were well developed and all in all I must admit that I was really surprised by how much I liked the book.

Will definitely be looking out other works by this author.

An Interesting Book if You Have Nothing Else

This book is not horrible, but it is very slow moving. I loved the rich description of Mary's everyday activities; they brought an historical reality to the work which is often missing in period pieces. But her accented speaking and (purposely) poorly written entries (to give Mary's writing historical authenticity) become tiresome. The plot is heavily based around events from the original Jeckyll and Hyde tale; it is very much a piece of fan fiction, so to speak, and in some respects Mary is - literally - a "Mary Sue", or a character inserted into a created world as a placeholder for the author. Also, I was annoyed that Mary's story ended with that of her master, and that no clues were left as to how her future proceeded. Read it if you have time.

A Brilliant, Enduring Novel of Stunning Imagination

Valerie Martin may be one of the two or three most accomplished writers of fiction of our time. She may also be the most misunderstood. It's rare that I take exception to other reviews here, but the most recent ones posted about Mary Reilly are so sadly misinformed, they need addressing. To begin with, to the reader who wasn't sure, the book is a NOVEL, not a history. It is a fictional take on another NOVEL, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. To the reader who was confused by the movie: the movie was so egregiously awful I tell everyone never to see it. It helps to have read Stevenson's novel, but not necessary at all. Mary Reilly was out of print for some years, a publishing sin, and it's right and proper it's been returned to the public. The novel is, simply put, perfectly constructed. Read it once for the powerful story of a doomed domestic and her equally doomed employer, then read it again for the poetic spareness and emotional wallop of the language. The opening chapter, a letter Mary writes to Dr. Jekyll about her subjection to one of the most catastrophic cases of child abuse you could imagine, sets up the framework for the novel. Mary's father nearly ruined her because she broke a cup. Much later, Mr. Hyde nearly rapes her--as he's breaking a cup. The duality of the images throughout the book mirrors the duality of Dr. Jekyll's spirit, as well as dualities in life and philosophy multiplying in the Jekyll household. The gardening episodes which so bored one reader are a subtle symbol of the creation theme: so much work to create, so little time to destroy. They also mark the difference between Mary and Jekyll. She creates good, he creates evil, although unwittingly.

The plot follows two lines: the unuttered romantic love between Mary and Dr. Jekyll, and the comparison of Hyde, not to Jekyll, but to Mary's father. It's a brilliant device, and works itself out in ever more elegant ways. Mary, the rare Victorian domestic who is literate, seeks in Dr. Jekyll the emotional response of a father and a lover. Dr. Jekyll, in turn, seeks from Mary the emotional and intellectual response of a lover/wife and a best friend. You want it to work for them. Oh, you do so desperately want it to. But you know the ending for Dr. Jekyll, and it remains for Valerie Martin's incredible imagination to weave in Mary's hopeless end according to Stevenson's original plot. I taught this book in the classroom for years, and of the hundreds of students who read it, NOT ONE ever disliked it.

Approach Mary Reilly as an unfolding map of literary treasure and you will find more gold than most works of fiction can even hint it. Five stars aren't enough for a horror novel which is a romantic novel which is a suspense novel which is an historical novel. Mary Reilly is unlike anything else you will ever read. I thank Valerie Martin every time I pick up this book for giving us so great a literary gift.

A rare and spellbinding novel that moves you 'till the end.

In this book we take a look at the diary of Mary, a traumatized character who works in the mansion of Dr. Jekyll and his assistant, Mr. Hyde. Throughout the book Ms. Martin does an excellent job of telling Mary's story through her journal entries, starting at her troubled childhood to when she develops a keen relationship with her "master," Dr. Jekyll. Throughout the time in which this book takes place, Ms. Martin gives us a fresh look on the famous Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde traedy through the eyes of a young girl who is seeing that the person that she cares about most is being destroyed by his work.
Although I agree that this book was extremely well written, I have to say that the ending lets the excitement exceed. Through several chapters of very extreme detail, the ending comes up as a dead halt with no where else to look. As soon as the ending had come up I felt as if I was driving and I came up to a dead end and did not know where else to go to look for all the questions that arose in my mind.

Good but not what was expected

You really still have to work from ISO 9000 and AS91xx and find examples that other companies have implemented as this book does not summarize or quote to material. It's really a commentary on top of these standards meant to help prepare you for an audit. It details common major and minor findings to help you check your system for completeness. It offers some examples for basic implementation but not for everything that is required. Worth the money, but don't expect this to teach you how to build a quality system from the ground up.
