Christopher Babayode has written a tour de force in business travel wellness, singling out the challenge of airplane travel in Farewell Jetlag: Cures From a Flight Attendant. He changes the conversation and understanding of jet lag.

About the Author
Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805 in Odense, Denmark. His father was a poor cobbler,  his mother nearly illiterate. At fourteen, armed with little more than sheer determination, Andersen went to Copenhagen, where he succeeded in winning the patronage of several prominent citizens, and acquired some formal schooling. In 1829, his poems, plays, and travel sketches began to appear. In 1835, his first novel, The Improvisatore, met with considerable success. That same year, he published his first collection of tales, to be followed over the years by further creations in a genre he made singularly his own.  His life was marked by extensive travels, enormous popularity, the friendship of many leading personalities of the era, and the highest honors of his native land. By the time of his death in 1875, this gauche, awkward figure, born in the humblest of circumstances, had enjoyed a career that might well have come out of one of his most imaginative tales.

Joanne Greenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932. She graduated from American University and presently teaches at the Colorado School of Mines. The author of many award-winning novels, including I Never Promised You a Rose Garden and In This Sign, she lives in Denver, Colorado.

Destined to be a Collectors Item

A superb collection of nine favorite H.C.A. stories (see below), wonderously illustrated with something like a hundred hig-quality reproductions, at least half of which are full-page, drawn from the work of twenty of the greatest artists from the "Golden Age" of children's book illustration (around the turn of the century). The art is simply mind-blowingly beautiful.
The tellings themselves are very fine. The language used is both delightful and sophisticated, making this a fine volume to entertain good readers amongst older children, and to expand their language skills. Of course, less able readers and younger children might like the stories just as well if they were read to them. There is no information in the book or on the publishers website regarding the origins of these particular tellings.
A sample paragraph, from "Thumbelina":
"Then they came to the warm lands. The sun was shining much more brightly, the sky was twice as high, and the most wonderful green and black grapes were growing by the roadside and on fences. Lemons and oranges hung in the forests, and there was a scent of myrtle and curled mint, and pretty children were running by the roadside playing with big colorful butterflies. But the swallow flew still further, and everything became even more beautiful. There, beneath magnificent green trees by a blue lake, stood a shining white palace, with vines climbing up it's lofty pillars. At the top were lots of swallows' nests, and the swallow carrying Thumbelina lived in one of them."

Best of its Kind

I have been slowly (so veeeerrry slooooowlllly) working my way through all the Hans Christian Andersen books available for kindle. This is the only one I would suggest reading.

Not only does this version have an active table of contents and lack any of the distracting misplacement of page numbers and illustration names that several of the others have (although it's still not illustrated), but it contains what appears to be every story ever written by Hans Christian Andersen!

Long stories (The Ice Maiden), short stories (The Princess and the Pea), well-known stories (The Little Mermaid), unknown stories (She was Good for Nothing) and dozens of others are all contained within these e-ink pages!

They are also readable! This is not the case with some of the other HCA books on kindle. The stories are still really boring, occasionally tedious, generally depressing and often religious, but yet I can read them without wanting to scream and pull my hair out as I did with What the Moon Saw: and Other Tales. Instead they are somehow magically more approachable and I can almost remember why I loved Hans Christian Andersen so much as a child (selected stories from, at least).

So if you, like me, are determined to try and re-visit your childhood via fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen no matter what, at least take pity on yourself--or pity on your children if you're trying to read the stories to them--and read this version.

Significant limits

The main line of argument in this book is important and may well be right. Cornell redefines the idea of the 'postmodern' so as to get clear of the usual rants about the theme. She modifies the kind of internal critique typical of many called 'postmodern' to that of the 'limit' that we come to in our attempts to rationalize our ethical and legal principles.
But, having cleared herself of the usual impediments like 'relativism' vs. 'absolutism' she persists in developing a serious critical attitude and method of approaching ethical and legal public controversies.
Chapter Five is particularly good - Cornell really hits her stride here, and rewards the reader for persisting with the first three chapters which are pretty heavy going at times unless you're already familiar with Hegel, Adorno and Levinas.
And the quality holds up right through to the end - on 'law dressed up as justice' and a final one on the relation of ethics, politics and jurisprudence.

Potentially important ideas not presented practically, hard to access

I have no training or background in philosophy, am just a "regular person" who believes that philosophy can or should be relevant to our lives, and wanting to understand where the thread of western philosophy is going, and how those threads tie in to threads and themes in other areas, such as psychology, spirituality, politics, feminism. My brief immersion in philosophy, which seems to find validation in the work of such as Derrida and Cornell, suggests that about 2500 years ago, Greek philosophers put themselves in a "box" of conceptual abstraction, and began the long march towards an extraordinary bias against emotion in favor of barren reason, by which they separated themselves from "reality" and the world to a great extent. Western Philosophy has been struggling ever since then to get out of that box. This also seems to me, as Richard Tarnas has so well pointed out in his "Passion of the Western Mind", an overwhelmingly male/masculine enterprise. Women, who within their bodies experience more fully the mysteries of life through the process of giving life, would not have been so lacking in common sense as to have tried to reduce the whole world to barren concepts and abstractions.

I resonate with Derrida's and Cornell's elaboration of the inherent violence of "totalizing" systems, such as Hegel's, or ideals of community, and applaud, as someone in many ways an "Other" to various presumptuous and imperialist systems, the space increasingly being made in philosophy for the "Other."
However I think both of them miss something that may be more obvious to an outsider, namely, that the "Other" which they express so much concern about, can be seen in many ways to be none other than the "messy" but rich, juicy stuff of human emotion itself, which they continue to marginalize by philosophizing in a way that continues the same old, same old extreme bias towards "reason" and against emotion. Cornell may be more accessible than Derrida, but why express oneself in such a way that is difficult for anyone but professional philsophers to follow? If you are so concerned about "the Other", why not write FOR "the Other", meaning the outsider to the stultifying realm of dry, narrow, lifeless modern philosophy, who is still in touch with the actual substance matter of vital life? I'd suggest that it's only RATIONAL, concept-based systems can be "totalizing", and thus imperialist and exclusive: systems which inherently contain mystery, such as symbolic systems, mythical systems which allow room for the imagination to continue to create, are numinous, open, allow space for new forms to emerge, are not closed like dead concepts. We can solve the problem of the exclusion of the "Other" by ceasing to privilege reason above all other ways of knowing.

I was eager to see what Cornell had to say about the application of the Philosophy of the LImit to law. I found myself disappointed. Her commentary addresses a relatively high-level, abstract and theoretical aspect of the legal system, that of "legal interpretation", which may benefit by her thinking, but which is somewhat irrelevant to the ways that many "little people" suffer under the legal system. As the "folk" who suffer under the system can tell you, tHere are many problems with the legal system that have nothing to do with legal interpretation at high levels. There are all too obvious problems of law which have not to do with legal hair-splitting, but simply have to do, again, with leaving out "the OTher", namely emotions and intuitions and, in fact, the whole SPIRIT of the law, while enforcing the dead LETTER of the LAW. Combing through the archives of the innocent who have suffered under the injurious and idiotic letter of the law, some manifestations of which include the "nanny state" laws that attempt to protect people from themselves, the plethora of frivolous lawsuits and the seeming complete inability of the legal system to stop these idiot cases (how about a judge who had the guts to just dismiss idiot cases?) I submit that no legal system can EVER be just which can only function under the dead "letter of the law." Just like a philosophy based exclusively in reason, which leaves out all the emotions of human life, is fated from the start to be meaningless and dead, so also any attempt to articulate justice using reason only, and to enforce it systematically with the letter of the law, allowing no room for human emotion and intuition, is bound to be injust.

Well do those speak who would argue that they are "above the law": in fact, EVERYONE is "above the law" when "the law" is constituted of dead matter, and is wholly literalistic, legalistic, impersonal, in essence, a machine without a human being at the controls. No human being can be reduced to that which is justified to be subjected to such a dead machine. Therefore, if the law be literal and applied by the letter, it follows that every human being, constituted of a numinous and remarkable complexity and uniqueness which far exceeds such idiocy, is above the law. Until the law can accomodate context and individual uniqueness, we are all "above the law."

People suffer under the law in many ways other than through insufficiency of high levels of subtle argument and abstract, philosophical pondering, and I would argue that it is somewhat offensive, as well as suggestive of privilege, and replicative of the continuing Western Imperialist arrogance extreme bias towards dead "reason", not to notice this, to be thus oblivious to the plight of the "folk" of the world.

Robert A. Yelle is Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Helen Hardin Honors Program at the University of Memphis. He received a Ph.D. in the History of Religions from the University of Chicago. timely, insightful and helpful

John Horvat succinctly describes the condition, history, diagnosis and prognosis of our current economic crisis. The economic chaos or peril is only symptomatic of the bigger and more crucial issue of a CULTURAL CRISIS. His terminology of FRENETIC INTEMPERANCE is brilliant. This is not an apologia to retreat from the world nor is it an attempt to turn back the clock, so to speak. It is a coherent explanation of the sitz-im-leben we find ourselves. Only an ORGANIC CHRISTIAN SOCIETY can save Europe and America from the same oblivion that doomed the Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. Western Civilization is rooted in the JUDAEO-CHRISTIAN ethos. No philosophical or economic theory can provide what an organic Christian society alone creates and supports. Not Socialism, not Communism, not Fascism and not unbridled, unrestricted and unlimited Consumeristic Capitalism. Horvat, like Fr. Sirico, shows that a Free Market makes sense and conforms to the Natural Moral Law but must also be constrained and governed by it as well. I highly recommend this book

A Magnificent Writing Achievement

At the outset, I should say that I'm not a general reader of RETURN TO ORDER, but rather the Christian editor who was asked to critique this book as it was nearing completion, and later copy edit it as well. I felt privileged to play a small role in the final editorial development of this book, which from any point of view is a magnificent writing achievement.

In RETURN TO ORDER, John Horvat first presents America's Christian history in a new light and then gradually gives us a clear picture of the things that created the framework of today's global economy, how most of the population is literally being herded by technology, and how frenetic forces are slowly destroying Christian civilization. He leaves no doubt that America's flight from temperance--which he calls "frenetic intemperance"--is like a cancer that is slowly but surely destroying our economy, breaking down our society, and throwing our way of life out of balance.

In this book, many years in the making, Horvat has brought together a wealth of meticulously researched historical facts and sobering industrial, financial, and technological perspective to make his points. The book's hundreds of footnotes confirm his extensive research and reading of dozens of books on a wide range of socio-economic topics--books many of us might never find in the first place or have the inclination or time to read if we did. While many readers find footnotes annoying, they are essential in a scholarly book such as this. In fact, Horvat's footnotes often contain relevant information as interesting as the text itself.

I like how confirming quotations from many authors and other experts have been used in conjunction with the author's own thoughts and ideas. No one could have done a better job in organizing and presenting so clearly such a massive amount of information and perspective from so many different research sources and doing so in a way that the average reader could understand it. Certainly the distillation of such a mass of material in one comprehensive book is a great accomplishment and aid to people with discerning minds who lead incredibly active lives but still find time for reading. (As Horvat explains in one chapter, time can so easily lose meaning inside our rushed schedules, giving us the sensation of having no time to do anything and doing nothing with the time we have.)

From a general reader's viewpoint, I found the whole book to be engrossing, especially the Introduction, which is likely to be quite sobering to those who haven't wanted to believe the serious trouble our country is in. As the book continues, Horvat uses words beautifully to paint bigger and bigger pictures of where America once was as a Christian nation and how we got to this particular point in time with an economy on the verge of financial collapse.

At one point in the book, the skeptic in me found me wondering what one group of people could actually do today to change the destructive course America is on. As I read on, however, I saw that in the event the worst happens, this book offers a plan for how to begin to restructure America as the Christian society it once was. By understanding where America has been and how it got to this point in history, Christians everywhere will begin to understand what they must do to rise up against the culture that is leading our country to ruin.

This book is not for the superficial reader. The author, similar to a microbiologists, researches the many causes of this cancerous phenomena, which is destroying our culture, in order to provide a cure. Using powerful and convincing facts on how America is worth fighting for the author details how the meaning of the phrase "the right of the pursuit of happiness" is misunderstood by many Americans and how this misunderstanding strikes at the heart of the problem. Mr. Horvat proves that by readjusting our moral compass we will be able to navigate our country from a frenzied society to a true Organic Christian order.
