Take a refreshing walk through nature after it's had a nice long drink!

In vivid photographs and sparse, yet action-filled text, April Pulley Sayre reveals the wonderful watered world after a rain shower. With rich curricular connections to weather, the water cycle, plants, and animals, as well as a grammar focus on verbs, this is a staple in the PK-1 classroom. This is a great introduction to nonfiction for young readers. However, the timeless, gorgeous photos will dazzle any age and spark research, as well. If you would like to take a refreshing walk through nature after it's had a nice long drink, this book will put you in the experience.

Amazing!

I hope you'll forgive me if I gush here a little bit. The photographs in this book are absolutely stunning. The incredible detail in the photos just blows my mind. I felt like I could reach out and touch the rain drops. You can actually see the fibers on the leaves. I could almost smell the fresh air that always comes with rain. The poetry is just as wonderful as the photographs, describing in just a handful of words what is happening in each photograph. Many different plants and animals and displayed here in all their glory. I think my favorite photograph was the one that shows a reflection of a branch in a rain drop. The author also does the reader a favor by describing at the end the science behind rain and the water cycle. There are also some great references to other books and websites that have additional information. An incredible book that is perfect for sharing or just for enjoying.

This is a stunning book! The photographs are amazing, especially the ones where the raindrops reflect surrounding images. The text is lyrical. Children will enjoy finding the hidden elements in some of the photos, which I learned about on the author's website. The perfect marriage of photos and text!

I think “The Potter’s Promise” is best summed up in a statement Professor Flowers makes in Chapter 1: “God is most glorified not at the expense of His creation, but at the expense of Himself for the sake of His creation.”

Mission Accomplished

This commentary accomplishes exactly what the Author, Leighton Flowers, intended and more. Flowers expresses his desire for the readers to fully understand why he had to denounce his belief in Calvinism. He leads the reader through his personal journey of discovery and shares the struggle he faced having learned that his long held, beloved beliefs had been wrong. His desire to know God's intended truth, leads to a wonderful, in-depth analysis of Romans 9. Flowers breaks down a relatively, difficult topic and passage in a way that is understandable, even to someone who is not knowledgeable of Calvinism. His writing stays on topic and in context making the reading easier to understand. I learned so much more about Calvinism and Romans 9. For me personally his analysis of this chapter is spot on in reconciling the text to the Living God in whom I serve. It could not have been easy for Leighton Flowers to openly, publicly denounce this belief. He stood to lose far more than what he would gain. It is refreshing to know there are still some men of God today who will hearken to The Lord and follow truth no matter what it costs. I highly recommend everyone read this commentary and then follow Flower's instruction and "stop and re-read Romans 9 through 11 all the way through from start to finish with this merciful motive in mind. See if you find a divine Father shamefully cutting off children before they are even born, or see if you find a Father mercifully seeking and even longing for the reconciliation of all." All I can really say is, this is wonderful. Anyone who reads this with a heart to really want to know the truth, will come away with truth. Thank you Brother Flowers.

A book I will reread!

Great book to go along with a great podcast at soteriology101. I loved the chapter that went verse by verse on Romans 9. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "In short, I believe God knows the choices of His creatures because He is omniscient, not because He is “omni- deterministic.”

Definitely worth your time as you seek to better understand God's plan of salvation and difficult passages like Romans 9.

Know what you're getting

I was initially a bit disappointed with this book. I was expecting an introduction to how contemplative practice developed within Christianity, and many of the contributors did indeed provide this. However, the editor, who is also a major contributor, early on displayed what seemed to me a bias and an agenda which I, as a Catholic Christian, found disconcerting. Relying heavily on the work of the Jesus Seminar, scholars like Elaine Pagels, and Gnosticism, she repeatedly appeared to favor speculation over tradition and orthodoxy (again, IMO).
Examples: Stating the historical facts about Jesus. "His parents were Mary and Joseph, who had four other sons and at least two daughters." No mention that traditional Catholic teaching maintains Jesus was an only child (and Son of God!). And why include this as supposed historic fact, when it has nothing to do with contemplative practice?
Another example is a supposed controversy over who wrote St. John's Gospel. Was it John, son of Zebedee, or "John the Elder"? Again what has this to do with contemplative practice? For me, it only showed the editor's desire, perhaps, to promote a "New Gnosticism."
Many of the other contributors were thoughtful enough to steer away from controversy, and for that I can recommend the book. I also found many of the editor's later chapters to be quite edifying and informative. Of course, if you are a believer in the teachings of the Jesus Seminar, or blessed with an open mind, then by all means, this book is for you. Just know what you're getting. Orthodox Catholics who read this book might also want to read Philip Jenkin's "Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost its Way"Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost Its Way to balance out some of the editor's claims.
What this book speaks to most of all is the call and a need for a deeper spirituality and union with God which so many of us sense, even Catholic curmudgeons like myself. It shows well how this call and need have manifested themselves throughout the history of Christianity.

This is an excellent introduction to the key figures and movements in the history of Christian spirituality. More than that, the layout of the book makes it a pleasure to read. All of its publishing details are first class too. Perfect for anyone looking for a good introductory overview of Christian spirituality.

Great, quick therapy!

I get this book for all my friends because it's a great pick-me-up for all situations. Procrastinate? Have trouble sleeping? Have trouble with anger? Having trouble starting to exercise? This book has quick little chapters on almost all of our problems. The best part is that you don't have to commit the time to reading many pages/chapters of a self-help book; this book is organized into mini-chapters that take about a minute to read (hence the title) that offer you *just* the right inspiration so you get can going and working on that 'issue' you're having. And, the advice is clear and down-to-earth, in addition to being very provocative and inspiring.

This book is like a good friend (or therapist) that can help you in any situation, with very clear, easy-to-follow advice. It's very deep in its simplicity.

Headlines with no depth

I think it's safe to say that any book with the selling hook of some conveniently relative, yet irrelevant, number of so called tips or strategies for doing this or that is going to pretty much suck. With all due respect for this guy Arnold Lazarus and his coming up with multi-modal therapy... this book is so basic, it really won't solve any of your problems. Consider it more like a phone book, if anything, with 101 contacts. It reminds me of watching Dr. Phil. The guy does nothing but offer references to solve your problems while using his name and fame as an acclaimed expert to get all the credit.

Save your money and harness the power of Google to do a little research on your own, then buy the book that's right for you, not the one that tries a catch-all approach and makes about 2 pages of space for each topic, not to mention the redundancy and repetition throughout.

Common Sense in an easy-to-read volume.

One hour, five days a week, father and son team Arnold Lazarus, Ph.D. and Clifford Lazarus, Ph.D. co-host a radio talk show. Those who call their show at radio station 1350 WHWH in Princeton, New Jersey, are offered advice on life's key issues, in ". . .succinct and straight forward bites." And this is how they wrote the book, The 60-Second Shrink: 101 Strategies for Staying Sane in a Crazy World--with compact and direct suggestions the layperson can understand.
Arnold A. Lazasrus,, Ph.D. is described as, ". . .an award winning, internationally acclaimed professor of psychology, therapist, author, lecturer and clinical innovator." His son, Clifford N. Lazasrus, Ph.D., has a practice in psychotherapy and neuropsychological testing and is the Director of Comprehensive Psychological Services in Princeton, New Jersey. They know of what they speak.
Each of the chapters tackle one problem. The dilemma is stated in a vignette, then steps are discussed in a sentence or two that will help solve the problen. I'll use Chapter 11, which discusses problem solving, as an example.
The vignette describes, "Eric's" tendency to wallow in self-pity. "I have so many problems," Eric says, "that I don't know what to do or where to start." The doctors say, "Eric was taught a five-step problem-solving sequence, learned how to be solution oriented, and matters started to change for the better."
The steps Eric took are outlined in the two-page chapter.
*Define the problem as specifically and concretely as possible. *Generate as many potential solutions as resonabley possible. *Evaluate the various solutions for merit and utility. *Select the best solution and try it out. *Decide on the effectiveness of the implemented solution.
Under each step are suggestions that help you complete the step.
The book is not written to be read from cover to cover, but it is a tool that you can turn to when needed. Other chapter titles are "Breaking the Bad habits," "The Dangers of Faulty Positive Thinking," and Self-fulfilling Prophecies and Negativity Cycles."
Areas covered in the book are Strategies for Staying Sane, Thinking Yourself Healthy, Getting Your Actions Together, Building Successful Relationships and Communicating Effectively. The book doesn't stop there, however. Other areas discussed are Handling Anxiety and Stress, Dealing With Depression, Anger and Moods, Managing Your Weight and "Shrinking" and Shrinks. The last chapter lists more mental health notes.
Each chapter is only a page or two long. The hint on how to deal with your problems are simple, the explanations are clear. The authors refer to work by other authorities in the field and list other recommended sources of information. The pros and cons of self-help books are even covered.
The answers may seem simplistic, but the brevity of the chapters demand this. However, the book does a good job of defining problems we all face and outlinig easy steps to facilitate correction of the problems. The book does deliver what it promises by putting all the information in , ". . .succinct and straightforward bites." handy, helpful and informative, the 158 page book is definitely worth the price.

Predictable and slow

All of these books (Saga of Recluse) are rather predictable and slow. Only a couple are really good. But it is like most series, you want to see what happens... so.. I am trying to finish the series. I am listening to the audible version of the book. I don't think I could read these and get through them. They are enjoyable enough when I am listening to them on a airplane or in a car.

Dangers of Digital Copying

I am a great fan of the Recluse series, and this book is solid fantasy reading. But however the transfer to digital is made, the errors are inexcusable. Reduce rendered as Recluce dozens of times, and many more errors. Out of focus copying, or a million monkeys at typewriters? What are we paying for?

Immerse yourself in a new universe

This text occurs approximately in the middle of the series of Recluce novels. This happened to be the first of the series that I read, buut I have since read them all (6 times!). I thought this was Modesitt's best story line, because it best describes the concepts of Recluse (Order) from Chaos' point of view. As in all the author's books of this series, great attention is given to character development. Every reader can probably identify with at least one character. I could not put this one down, and ended up reading all of it in one night. Like a good dessert, I was sorry when I was finished!

Great book!

This book was great for our 8,7,4 year old who are always comparing everything with each other. They enjoyed the illustrations and we had a good discussion about the message of the book. Two of our children have special needs that require some extra attention and this book helped illustrate we love all our children just the same, and give them what they need.
