More than they seem

Amazing and compelling. These books may be listed as "fantasy"; however, there are kernels of ethics, morality, spirituality, life lessons, logic, reason, and much more within and scattered throughout all of these novels. They are both escapist and relaxation stories, and deep soul touching and intelligent personal discourse allowing the reader to see themselves and those around them as if from the perspective of a disembodied or unattached observer - it is stunning when this realization finally comes to you. I have yet to find any book or novel throughout those within the Wizards of the Coast line (Dungeons and Dragons, Forgotten Realms) that does not have merit, in one way or another. My children have just begun reading these, and they are starting to see this and ask questions, allowing discourse and enlightenment. I thank the authors for this wonderful gift.

To read, or not to read: that is the question.

Bought the Omnibus to reread again, makes it convenient having 3 in 1.

I was given the 1st book in the trilogy when it first came out as a Christmas present back in the 80's. Got around reading it a few months later, honestly couldn't put it down.

After reading the 1st one I lucked out getting the 2nd one when it was released, to be honest, a saleswoman at the bookstore (Waldon's) screwed up and sold me a copy that she grabbed from storeroom, the shipment of them had just arrived and where not to be sold until midnight that evening. They sold out that evening within an hour.

It's one of those books in a series that you'll cram time to read whether waiting in line, riding a bus, sitting in the backseat of a car, washing your clothes at the laundromat, or on the toilet.

If you like magic, DnD style storyline/world, characters of varies alignments, good and not so good working together in order to battle a powerful foe, in a well thought out world, then this is a great series to read. Raistlin Majere being one of my favorite characters, he's good at being bad.

Word of advice, read these 3 books (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning) before picking up any other Dragonlance book.

Some of the later books are hit and miss when it comes to a good story, but for me the first three are by far the best.

So so.

About fifteen years ago I read The Death Gate Cycle by Weis and Hickman and really enjoyed it. I picked that series up again this year and, to my surprise, devoured it with the same enthusiasm I had as a child. That series was well written, engaging, mature, and nuanced. The first book took a bit to get into, but then each book after was better and better.

I bought the Dragonlance Chronicles from Weis and Hickman hoping for more of the same, but I have to say I was disappointed. Maybe the target audience is younger, or maybe it was a more junior work on the part of the authors, but for whatever reasons this book felt much more like cookie-cutter fantasy fiction. While there were a few unexpected turn of events, for the most part you can guess at the ending the whole time. The characters, while each "developing" throughout the novel all still feel a little thin and predictable (e.g. The spoiled child learns to grow up and be selfless and humble). Pretty basic stuff here. Not a lot of depth of character and not a lot to grapple with. Pretty straightforward good guys vs. bad guys, and you know what side people land on quickly.

Unlike the Death Gate Cycle this was a series that I would have enjoyed in my early teen years but is too simplistic and formulaic for me as an adult. If you're reading this review and considering this series for yourself or as a gift, I'd actually suggest just jumping skipping this bland appetizer and going straight to the delicious main course that is The Death Gate Cycle.

Not a good introduction to anything. A very long list of what is considered to be Modernist art, but very little discussion as to why. No useful elaboration on what modernism in itself is or what holds all this work together. Nor am I particularly convinced that the graphic portion of this book adds anything. Other volumes of this series are better.

This book has a lot of very handy tips on wood carving, If your starting out trying your hand at wood carving,you will find this book very usefull.There are 25 books in this set, all on different subjects.Ive found them to be very good on showing me how to go about makeing different projects.

Tragic and Triumphant

The King Arthur Conspiracy reads, in one sense, like a literary detective novel, in another like a Shakespearean tragedy. I became intrigued with all things Arthurian as a university undergraduate some twenty years hence and have been preoccupied with it ever since. Meticulous attention to detail and world-class research weave this version of the historical Arthur into the most viable interpretation I have had the pleasure to read.

Simon Andrew Stirling is a superb researcher and a gifted writer. Anybody even mildly interested in the Arthurian saga or British history will NEED to read this book. I haven't been this taken away by a historical accounting in many, many years. Tragic and triumphant at once, this is one of those rare books that I will read time and again in order to savor the full complexity.

Be warned: this work will stir some controversy, as the early Christian Church is implicated in Arthur's downfall and the subsequent fabricating of Arthurian history to protect and promote its own agenda.

A Fascinating and Intriguing Read

With its wealth of historical and mythical information, this book is a truly fascinating read. I loved the lyrical sound of the Celtic and Gaelic names, and the author's deep knowledge of his subject shone through clearly. I was effortlessly guided back through the ages to a time of warring tribes, warrior kings and early Christian saints; secretive Druidic cults and ancient bards. Simon Stirling wields a masterful pen as he skilfully unpicks the deliberate web of deceit and misdirection surrounding the figures of Arthur, `Merlin' and Taliesin, to reveal the human beings beneath.

Despite my interest in the premise behind this book I confess I was reluctant to have the trappings of legend stripped away from my idea of `King Arthur' (probably because I'm an author of fantasy novels!). After reading it, however, I find I can appreciate and admire the man of history while leaving the myth untouched. I now have a longing to visit the places of Arthur's great battles, to walk beside his grave, and to admire for myself the great cauldron that came to be known as the Holy Grail.

I would recommend this fascinating and well written book to anyone with a love of history, a taste for drama, or simply a desire to understand how legends are formed.

Simon Andrew Stirling weaves a wonderfully told historical account. Recommended for lovers of history, the Arthurian Legend, or someone that likes reading a good old fashioned mystery. A book worthy of rereads to capture the complexity of the tale. A bit of advice - read with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.

Requirements Done Right

Today we have a lot of different software development processes to choose from. We have Scrum, XP, the Unified Process, the Rational Unified Process, the Open Unified Process, the Enterprise Unified Process, Lean Processes, DSDM, TDD, Cleanroom, RAD, Spiral, and Waterfall. I am sure there are plenty more. Those are just the ones I can think of sitting here waiting on the train.

All the different processes out there have one thing in common, not getting requirements right is their Achilles' heel. Wrong requirements mean a lot of rework at best, and complete project failure in the worst scenarios.

The Volere Requirement Process described in this book can be used with any of the processes listed above. Every process needs to gather requirements.

After starting with some fundamental truths about requirements gathering and an introduction to the Volere Requirement Process the author digs into the detail of the process's activities and resulting artifacts. The authors really give a lot of great advice on techniques for eliciting (they refer to it as trawling) requirements. They have outlined some great ways to interact with the project stakeholders that will get them thinking about the requirements that need to be met. It is clear the authors understand how difficult it can be working with stakeholders. The elicitation techniques account for stakeholders who have no idea what they are looking, to those that think they know what they want but need convinced otherwise, because they don't have a full picture of the context yet.

The attention given to non-functional requirements was great. I have seen some requirements books that mention them but stay within the context of functional requirements. This book has a full chapter on them and treats them throughout the rest of the book as first class citizens. The reason I mention this is, that as a software architect, the non-functional (quality attributes) are what I am interested in during the architecture phase.

One of the things I really like about the book is that it includes the entire Volere Requirements Specification in one the appendices. My one gripe with the book is that you have to pay $55 to download the electronic version of the template from the author's web site.

The authors do a really great job of covering the full requirements gathering process using a case study. They cover a ton of deliverables and they cover them in depth.

One of the other things I found really cool was the Requirements Knowledge Model. It shows the collected knowledge you gain throughout the requirements process It also provides a common language to use for managing and communicating requirements.

The reason I found this to be so cool is that the number one thing documenting a system does for me is give me the detailed knowledge I need to understand it. More problems are usually found trying to communicate a system to different stakeholders than are found just running it.

Overall I found this book easy to read and understand. The authors have a great writing style.

If you have anything to do with requirements, no matter the process, this book belongs on your shelf.

This is a thorough, well-written guide to the requirements process. Really outstanding.

I was initially a bit put off by the graphics in this book, which make clip art look classy. However, the writing is really, really good, and the treatment of the subject area is nothing short of amazing. Unlike other books on requirements that take the approach of a reference book and consequently read like a phone directory, Mastering the Requirements Process follows a case study from end to end, saving the reference materials for the appendixes, where they belong. Did I mention how good the writing is? The reason that most technical books are impossible to read is the poor quality of the prose and of the organization of the material. This is a happy exception to that tendency. I really like this book.

Songs is aptly titled, for while Bruce Springsteen contributes text to this 300-page book, the writing centers on his songs, tangentially sketching his life story. The lyrics to well over 100 songs are presented, dating from the first track on his 1973 debut, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. (that would be "Blinded by the Light") through the last selection on 1995's The Ghost of Tom Joad ("My Best Was Never Good Enough"). The lyrics are broken up by photos (a ponytailed youth practices his guitar on a bed in his parents' apartment, the Boss buys a burger, Springsteen mugs while on a desert motorcycle outing). Original lyric sheets provide some insight into the Jersey boy's creative methodology. Most interesting, however, are the chapters Springsteen penned for the book. Broken down by album, they provide abbreviated accounts of his creative development, and some of the writing is quite telling. (Of his commercial smash Born in the U.S.A., he professes ambivalence: "It forced me to question the way I presented my music and made me think harder about what I was doing.") Passionate fans of the man will find this heavy-duty songbook, journal, and photo album rewarding, and it certainly whets the appetite for a more thorough memoir. --Steven Stolder

This book is a must for any Bruce fan who is at a fan. It's him, as the singer/songwriter speaking about his songs, the rememberances, the feelings, the anxieties, hope, happiness, and faith. He has run the gamut to get at these words
from his heart to ours. I am taking a long time, re-reading, and savoring it all. He speaks to me through his songs and music.

The "new school" Negroes' role in the Aboltionists crusade.

I recently reviewed this exceptional book for a college history class: Benjamin Quarles did an exceptional job in supporting his well-balanced and non-biased arugment that even though widely neglected in history, the Negro played a significant role in the abolitionists crusade. Quarles's use of Primary sources made this non-biased argument possible. A quick summary of the book is as follows: The "new school" movement began in the late 1820s to the early 30s, and it gave free Negroes the opportunity to publicly speak their views on slavery and the equality of blacks. Even though not all blacks were abolitionists, their general attitude was, as John Scoble stated in 1853, "'...[to be] true to their brethren in bonds...and to remain by them whatever the cost'" (p.7). Whether he be free-born or slave-born, man or woman, an active aboltionist or a supporter of abolition, the Negro was true to his brother in slavery. Evidence of this was shown in Negro reformist sheets, and narratives written by former slaves. The kinship Negroes felt toward the slave was also shown in the formation of anti-slavery societies, in the trips to England in hopes of gaining anti-slavery support, and Negro participation in The Underground Railroad. This book is an excellent account of the Negro participation in the abolitionist movement, long neglected in history. The fact that this book has a well-balanced, greatly supported, easy to read, and truthful arument, makes it exceptional. Quarles said it best when he noted, "To the extent that America had a revolutionary tradition, [the Negro] was its protagonist no less than its symbol" (p.249). One will never feel the same about the Negroes' union in their struggle for freedom and equality, after he reads, Black Aboltionists, by Benjamin Quarles.

A pioneering history

Quarles virtually founded the history of black abolitionism, and he set the bar very high. Before Black Abolitionists, the story of antislavery was viewed almost completely as a matter of selfless, dedicated--or fanatical--whites, with blacks in the roles of desperate fugitives or bit players. Quarles up-ended the narrative and demonstrated that blacks were the key actors, with whites--with very few exceptions--taking at best supporting roles. This is an essential starting point for anyone interested in the antislavery movement or 19th-century U.S. society and reform.

I've read several books by Benjamin Quarles and each one is really fascinating. He does a great job of presenting the full story with well documented history from original sources. This book presents forgotten heroes with the courage to rise up against the incredible evil. He traces the progress of black abolitionists as they became early civil rights leaders. Our schools really need these stories of people like David Walker who published a book that caused the states of South Carolina, Georgia and more to pass laws against free speech because he had told the slaves to rise up and serve no master but Christ. There's so much more in this powerful book which should be required reading for anyone studying Civil War history.
