Bernie Sanders: A Biography

Bernie Sanders is an American politician and the junior United States senator from Vermont. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election. A member of the Democratic Party since 2015, Sanders had been the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, though his caucusing with the Democrats entitled him to committee assignments and at times gave Democrats a majority. Sanders was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. While a student he was an active civil rights protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. After settling in Vermont in 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns for governor and U.S. senator in the early to mid-1970s. As an independent, he was elected mayor of Burlington—Vermont's most populous city—in 1981, where he was reelected three times. In 1990 he was elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1991 Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected with 71% of the popular vote.

Sanders rose to national prominence following his 2010 filibuster against the proposed extension of the Bush tax cuts. He favors policies similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe, particularly those instituted by the Nordic countries, and has built a reputation as a leading progressive voice on issues such as campaign finance reform, corporate welfare, global warming, income inequality, LGBT rights, parental leave, and universal healthcare. Sanders has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War. He is also outspoken on civil liberties and civil rights, particularly criticizing racial discrimination in the criminal justice system as well as advocating for privacy rights against mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act and the NSA surveillance programs.

The best book available on Lisp implementation

This is an excellent book on Lisp implementation. You'll get a lot out of it, whether you are interested in writing compilers and interpreters (for Lisp or any language) or whether you just want to see how Lisp works. It is the modern day successor to Allen's "Anatomy of Lisp".

Good book on functional languages.

This is the English Translation of a book originally published in French, under the title _Les_Langages_Lisp_.
In it, Quinniec covers a variety of different approaches to interpretation and compilation. Typically, an idea is presented with a chapter discussing the issues related to it -- then in the following chapter, a compiler or interpreter that implements it correctly. He covers compilation to C, compilation to bytecodes, direct interpretation, token-reduced interpretation, denotational semantics, lambda-calculus, continuations, macros, and an object system. It's well-written and engaging, and unlike some translations, the English is handled very well. The primary language being considered (and used) is Scheme -- arguably the easiest LISP dialect to implement and the hardest to implement well.

The future history of programming

I'm not a professional reviewer. But I program a lot, and for a living. After more than 15 years of experience in algorithm development and user interface design, to name some extremes, I get the feeling that "traditional" computer programming languages like C (C++, C#, Objective C) and Pascal (Modula, Oberon, ADA)

and even oldtimers as Cobol and Fortran tend to develop, or rather mature, into languages getting closer and closer to Lisp, Algol, and their ultimate offspring, Scheme.

This is not without reason.

But although the many qualities of Lisp have long since been known in academia, they need time and, more important, good reference material, to find their way into the real world.

Lisp programmers know the value of everything, but the cost of nothing, it is said. Christian Queinnec neatly fills the gap in our knowledge in a book that is a hard read because of the density of the content, but also a fun book because all the source is there (available through the Internet, of course) to experiment with.

You will not only gain insight into the workings of your Lisp system. You will gain insight into the basic elements of computer programming languages and their reason for being, their implementation, and the benefits and costs they will bring you.

All in all, one of the best books on Lisp I have ever almost, but not completely grokked.

I sincerely believe that tomorrow's programming languages, whether they be called C** or Delphi 2010, will be closer to current Lisp than to current C or Pascal, and a way to efficiently implement these languages is available here and now.

The book covers all standard material like direct interpretation, compilation towards a virtual machine using bytecodes, and compilation to C. New material is found in the chapter on macro's , a subject that has regained much interest of late. A broad variety of programming styles is used to illustrate all concepts.

There is only one drawback to the book. It won't teach you Lisp, or Scheme. That is, unless you already know it.

About the Author

Daniel Breazeale, University of Kentucky

Daniel Breazeale was born in Houston, Texas in 1945. After attending Austin College, he earned his PhD in philosophy from Yale University in 1971. Since then he has been a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky, where is also Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences. Breazeale has been a frequent recipient of research grants and fellowships from such sources as the National Endowment for Humanities and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is a co-founder of the North American Fichte Society and the author of many essays on Fichte, German idealism, and Nietzsche. He is also the translator of numerous volumes of Fichte's writings and the co-editor of a dozen volumes of collected essays on his philosophy.

A book for beginners and up.

This is a book for any level of loom bead work. She explains about a lot of things with different types of bead looms and techniques. I am self taught. I simply got a loom and followed the in box directions. I learned the hard way some of the things this book explains. I also learned a better way to do some techniques. There are diagrams and pictures to help with explanations. Most are in color, diagrams are detailed. Patterns present explain best type of loom and techniques to make. This is a book to make bead looming easier to understand and do. I have the Kindle version. This means I can enlarge diagrams for better visualization.

I found this book to be very informative. I especially liked the section on adding decorative edges to bead loomed bracelets and though I am not skilled (at all) with a needle and thread I followed the directions and added a nice edge on to a bracelet I had loomed that I just wasn't quite satisfied with and the edging made the difference. Lots of good ideas to try.

What a great book! I love the way she explains everything. Even if the patterns are not exactly what you want (and why would you just copy things?) she shows you how to make it your own, just the way you want it. The illustrations are clear and easy to follow. So happy that I ordered this on Kindle, so I can take it with me when I travel

I have this and love it ...so this was a gift for a friend having major surgery. Print is very easy to read--cover is comfortable and lovely to hold-- very soft. Scriptures all written out so easy to read Bible scriptures right on same page. I think this is my favorite devotional Ever...and I have several. This version hard to find -- thanks to Amazon for giving me a source to order it from! Makes a terrific gift but get one for yourself too!

Jesus Calling in Large Print Beautifully Done

This book is very beautifully done. It's cover has a soft velvety feel, color is lovely. The print is large which is great especially if you are looking or buying for an older individual. Scriptures that are ordinarlily just printed as references in the usual small Jesus Calling book are completely written out. Very nice gift for anyone. Very nicely done!

A 365-page dictionary style compendium of entries on the civilization that ruled vast portions of Mesopotamia for nearly 500 years, yet which remained largely unknown until excavations of the 19th century revealed the extent of its influence upon the ancient world. A solid resource for students, scholars, and general readers, Historical Dictionary Of The Hittites is practical and easy-to-use, though many of the entry are the names of individual figures, or cities, or terms related to Hittite civilization and thus would be unfamiliar to the lay reader until he or she read the descriptive text.
