About the Author
E. Keith Blankenbaker is a leader in technology education curriculum development. He introduced contemporary technology education into the secondary schools where he taught in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. As a teacher educator he developed, and for 25 years, taught construction technology courses for technology education majors at The Ohio State University. During this same period he taught technology education curriculum, laboratory design, and supervised student teachers. He is the author of three Goodheart-Willcox books: Modern Plumbing, Construction and Building Technology and Painting and Decorating, in addition to several other texts. He has served as principal investigator for the Construction Education Curriculum Project, funded by the Associated General Contractors. He also served as principal investigator for the first edition of the plumbing apprenticeship program offered by the Associated Builders and Contractors. Dr. Blankenbaker has provided leadership on the local, state, and national level. As a secondary school teacher he served as department chairman and was elected president of the regional industrial technology teacher education association. As a teacher educator he was elected program coordinator, served as president of the Ohio Technology Education Association, acted as coordinator for the development of a new technology education curriculum guide for Ohio, and served as a member of the ITEEA Board of Directors. His construction work experience includes designing, building, maintaining, and remodeling residential and light commercial structures. These experiences include forming, placing, and finishing concrete; framing; roofing; plumbing; electrical; installing doors and windows; exterior and interior finish carpentry; cabinetmaking; and painting.

Olivia Bouler is eleven years old and lives in Long Island with her parents and little brother Jackson. Wonderful Resource

Oliva's talent and dedication to nature and "her" birds is very evident in her first book. Although the reading age is 9-12, this book is a must for many people. Both of my sons (ages 6 and 10) loved the pictures and text, but more importantly it led to discussions with me about what we see around us everyday and how we can do little and big things to better our world. In addition, I think school libraries, elementary classrooms, grandparents and any interested artist would enjoy Olivia's book. The information is accessible, inspirational and informative - and a purchase supports Audubon and their good works. Overall, a must have!!

Impressive!

Impressive! Everything about Olivia's book and fundraiser shows a lot of heart. From her colorful, accurate and detailed sketches, to the words on the page to her amazing resourcefulness in waging a campaign to help out after the Gulf Coast disaster, this eleven-year old shows that impossible is not a word in her vocabulary and it doesn't have to be in ours. This book is totally appropriate for nature loving kiddos ages 9-12, especially bird lovers. Olivia provides facts about the birds and their plight (if endangered) making this an eco-conscious book. She also suggests practical, doable ways kids can help out. A great book to purchase knowing that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Audubon's Gulf Coast clean up efforts. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

This charming book can be read as a picture book, a guide book or a how-to manual for saving the environment. It's written by an 11 year old who wants to share her fascination with wildlife as well as her beautiful drawings. A must for every elementary schoolroom and all kids 5-12.

That The Illustrated Man has remained in print since being published in 1951 is fair testimony to the universal appeal of Ray Bradbury's work. Only his second collection (the first was Dark Carnival, later reworked into The October Country), it is a marvelous, if mostly dark, quilt of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. In an ingenious framework to open and close the book, Bradbury presents himself as a nameless narrator who meets the Illustrated Man--a wanderer whose entire body is a living canvas of exotic tattoos. What's even more remarkable, and increasingly disturbing, is that the illustrations are themselves magically alive, and each proceeds to unfold its own story, such as "The Veldt," wherein rowdy children take a game of virtual reality way over the edge. Or "Kaleidoscope," a heartbreaking portrait of stranded astronauts about to reenter our atmosphere--without the benefit of a spaceship. Or "Zero Hour," in which invading aliens have discovered a most logical ally--our own children. Grade 7 Up-Paul Hecht's calm, assured voice narrates this classic science fiction anthology by Ray Bradbury that brings to life the social and political fears prevalent in post World War II America, when they were first published. The unnamed narrator in the introduction watches the Illustrated Man's tattoos come to life presenting the 19 short stories. Resonant with authority, Hecht's voice presents rocket men in difficult circumstances, and yet he is able to be detached from their impending deaths. This is contrasted with the gentle tones of devotion of religious clerics. His speech presents a full variety of techniques. He changes pitch for the women characters, and modulates volume and speed to depict the full spectrum of emotions. Efficient production so that most stories are completed on a single side of a tape will enable teachers to locate easily a desired story for class presentation. Haunting Stories of Depressing Beauty

Conceptually, The Illustrated Man is brilliant from the get-go, including its novel premise of 18 stories as told through the moving tattoos on a man's body; in addition to weaving intricate webs, the Illustrated Man's body art predicts the future.
And, oh, what stories are told. As a science fiction writer, it is no surprise that the majority of Bradbury's stories have to do with space and the future (heck, all of space was in the future when these stories were written in the early 50s). Additionally, the majority of the tales are pretty bleak, dealing with dark themes of revenge, futile searches for paradise, and Armageddon. However, save for their near-universal excellence, thought-provocation, and prescience, the similarities end there.
Among them: Mars is colonized by black people who have left Earth's prejudices, and await with apprehension the arrival of a white-piloted rocket ship from their former homeland; another planet's soldiers attack Earth and are surprised at the warm welcome they receive, only to learn that they can be conquered by Earth's lousy diet, sedentary ways, and shallow culture as easily as by the planet's military; an assembly of priests travels to Mars to learn about Martian sins, so as to spread God's word and earn converts of the Red plant; an entire city is built with the concept of vengeance in mind, by its citizens who were to perish before being able to exact that revenge themselves; the authors of classic tales of horror, whose works are banned on Earth, are themselves exiled to Mars and only kept alive by the few remaining copies not burned for censorship.
There are a couple of lame ducks herein, but even those are salvaged by the beauty of Bradbury's writing. His metaphors and descriptive devices flow from the pages and grant a macabre beauty to even the most desolate of landscapes.

Illustrating Human Nature

Sometimes it's hard to remember that Ray Bradbury approaches the art of the short story in a very unconventional way. His collections of short stories are often tied together by common sub-themes or settings, although each story could also stand on its own. Such is the case here, though the running theme to the Illustrated Man collection is mostly an abstraction. Apparently the stories here are told by a man's haunted tattoos, but don't worry about that too much. The true theme holding this group of stories together is examinations of human nature and mankind's place in the universe. Bradbury's frequent use of Mars (and occasionally other planets) as a setting, with the obligatory spaceships and technology, is merely his method of creating alternate realities to bring human nature into bold relief.
Bradbury's classic examinations of the dark and melancholy side of humanity are well represented here as always, with his trademark poetic writing style and underlying sense of creeping dread. The classic virtual reality tale "The Veldt" is found here, with the typical misuse-of-technology theme presented in an unexpectedly haunting fashion. More evidence that the stock sci-fi themes are merely a thin backdrop can be seen in "The Other Foot," a chilling examination of race relations; or "The Rocket," which deals with the yearning of regular people to reach beyond the confines of Earth. Other winning stories include "Kaleidoscope" and "The Long Rain" which are haunting tales of how human nature can still undermine the greatest achievements of cold technology. So don't concern yourself with the typical sci-fi backdrop, and get in tune with what Ray Bradbury is really talking about.

Standards-based and VERY pertinent to today's issues

I am a high school chemistry teacher. This book is by far the best I've seen at introducing chemical issues AND rudimentary chemistry at the same time. It is very heavily text-based, and there is minimal math. However the dense reading must be taken slowly by some students-- especially younger students with challenged reading levels. This book is perfect for conceptual or environmental chemistry classes, and the exercises promote deep and analytical thinking. The definitions are lightly highlighted, and there are valuable web resources and links within the text as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about how chemistry applies to global climate change, acid rain, and alternative energy. Excellent!

Miraculously, throughout this ordeal, the expedition's photographer, Frank Hurley, protected his negatives and photographs from destruction. It is these extraordinary photographs that are among those produced in this illustrated edition of Alfred Lansing's harrowing and inspiring classic.

About the Author
Alfred Lansing (1921–1975) was a native of Chicago. After serving more than five years in the Navy, he enrolled at Northwestern University, where he studied journalism. Until 1949 he edited a weekly newspaper in Illinois, later joined the United Press, and eventually became a freelance writer.

Incredible

This is an absolutely amazing and true accounting of the 1914 Antarctic expedition gone to hell. It is clear that the author did an incredible amount of research, and though this book doesn't read like a novel, its presentation is much more powerful this way, giving a panoramic view of the whole terrible and desperate situation of these men.
I don't have any experience even comparable to what these men went through, the closest I've ever come is rowing down the coast of Maine in the summer in a 30 foot pulling boat, and I'll tell you, this guy gets every detail.
Anyway, an absolutely incredible look at human endurance, at what a person will go through if he must. I definitely recommend this book to everyone.
One note...make sure the version you buy or get at the library has expedition photographer Hurley's photographs in it. Some paperback editions don't, and you're really missing part of the experience without them.

A True Life Adventure Expedition Stand Out

Within the genre of real life adventure books, Endurance is definitely a stand out. I am lucky to have a brother who regularly reads about explorers and wilderness adventures and recommends to me only the best of the best. Other must-reads in the genre are The Long Walk (though that turns out to be most likely fiction so I no longer recommend it), Into the Wild, and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North. Endurance tells the true story of Ernest Shakleton and his crew's ill-fated and legendary expedition to Antarctica. It was likely one of history's best outcomes for what was essentially a disaster.

At the time of launching, Shakleton's expedition was history's most extensively planned exploratory trip to Antarctic, complete with a photographer, scientists, carpenters and engineers (a crew of 27 in total). Shakleton's goal was to transverse and study Antarctic. When they set off in 1914, this expedition was the pride of the United Kingdom. Shakleton was the toast of the town for his bravery and expertise. For his bravery he is still toasted, but his polar expertise proved to be lacking. The ship he guided was no match for the South Pole's crushing cold and ice. Soon after arriving, the Endurance was stuck in ice, absolutely unable to move. The crew salvaged what it could and was forced to make do with dwindling supplies and provisions, eventually eating some of their beloved dogs.

I won't dampen your reading pleasure by giving away too much of the unfolding events, but through a combination of amazing resourcefulness, outstanding leadership, and ultimately incredible luck on the part of Shakleton, the whole crew survived without a single life lost. Naturally, there was an abundance of suffering along the way, but also an impressive amount of team spirit and toughness. The book is inspirational and a quiet page turner.

Please note, the "quiet page turner" part. Endurance is definitely an engrossing read, and once you get into it, you won't want to put it down. I found the book starts a bit on the slow side, at least for all its fanfare, but don't give up if you aren't immediately bowled over. You'll be justly rewarded if you stick with it.

Nothing is so bad that it can't get worse

This book is one of the few exceptional -absolutely execptional- tales of survival and it proves the maxim that nothing is so bad that it can't get worse. But also it proves that you can know the end of a story - it is a well known fact that Shackleton brought all his men through this arduous trial and all survived - and it doesn't spoil the story at all. Truth is not only stranger than fiction, but it is a good deal harder.
The bare-bones of the story are that Shackleton and his team left civillisation in 1914 in the Endurance to travel to attempt to reach the South Pole - a trip he had tried and failed by only a couple of hundred miles or so to achive in 1908. Amundsen had already reached the pole first but for Shackleton it was unfinished business. The Endurance had been built to push through the pack ice, but conditions proved too much and it was trapped in pack ice. Summer wore on and there was no escape - the winds were in the wrong direction - then winter hit and they were trapped in their boat. They settled in to a routine until the ice went against them and cracked the Endurance. Shackleton realised the only way out was on their own, so they abandoned the boat and made for the pack ice at first dragging the boats, then relying a floe to carry them north where they might find more supplies, or be rescued.
In the end they had to rescue themselves and this is the story of their indomitable courage and strength to survive under incredibly harsh conditions and in grave discomfort. We are talking about camping out in antartica - in less than adequate shelter, with essentially starvation rations, no heating, barely adequate clothing.
Lansing tells this story in a sparing style and it really works. He has had access to (I think) all the diaries available from men who kept them on the trip and they are very revealing of both personalities and foibles of the various characters who made up the trip - and these aren't all a bunch of saintly characters pulling together for the sake of their team and mutual survival - they fight, some are occassionally selfish, they love their dogs but have almost no compunction of putting them down when they have to - and they are very real and human.
Lansing also brings to light some of the things you wouldn't think about it - the incredible boredom that they all felt, that they were generally alternatvely wracked by either gripping hunger or desparate need for survival and how to escape - the one emotion replacing the other depending on conditions. He also explains some of the things you wouldn't even think to ask - how they went to the toilet for instance, the conditions inside the huts and the tents and so on. It brings a very vivd picture of life as it must have been for the group.
And really, nothing isn't so bad that it can't get worse. Each time you think that Shackleton is about to win there is a small disaster, or the elements go against them - they are constantly battling for their lives with decreasing odds of their survival. Even once they make it off the floe and onto land they have to move again to a safer landing place - and then they must work out how to get help. The nearest land is Chile some 500 miles away but it is almost impossible to get to because of wind and current, so they must try to South Georgia, over 800 miles away and a tiny speck of an island 25 miles across and they only thing in their way between Antartica and South Africa. Hardly an easy thing find in an open 22 foot boat. I know recently they tried to re-enact the voyage of Shackleton in his tiny boat - the James Caird - but without success as storms forced them to abandon the attempt. And that was a luxury trip compared to Shackleton's - the conditions on board were appalling - with stones for ballast - very little room and the ever present rotting reindeer hair from their sleeping bags. It is all credit to their navigator Frank Worsley that they reached South Georgia at all....but then they had had to land on the wrong side of the island due to conditions......but read the book - definitely read it.....
This book would make a great adventure book to introduce Antarctic exploration for younger children or teenagers as it is so vivid and so exciting. They are chased by killer whales and leopard seals, they are constantly fighting the elements and they are if nothing else a very human group of people. This is one of the best books of survival I have ever read and is highly recommended.

Outstanding advice on people management

If you are looking for a quick introduction to the ideas of a number of thought-leaders on how to manage people, this book is a good resource. The ideas discussed in this book include:

Daniel Goleman: There are six leadership styles - coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching. The most effective leaders are able to change between these styles when appropriate.

Frederick Herzberg: Punishments and rewards are ineffective tools for motivating people. Instead, try enriching their jobs by removing controls, giving employees more information, and giving access to greater challenges.

Manzoni and Barsoux: Employees who are viewed as weak performers often live down to expectations because the supervisor's attempts at performance management result in worse rather than better performance.

Carol Walker: New managers often perform poorly because they have not learnt the skills of delegating, getting support from above, projecting confidence, focusing on the big picture, and giving constructive feedback.

Marcus Buckingham: Great managers do not try to change their employees. Instead, they tweak roles to capitalize on individual strengths, create personalised incentives, and tailor coaching to unique learning styles.

Kim and Mauborgne: Harmony in the workplace required fair process, including inviting input from employees affected by a decision, explaining the thinking behind decisions, and providing clear expectations.

Must read for first time manager as well as seasoned person for fresh perspective

This book is collection of articles published in HBR that are still relevant today. Technology progressed but people, psychology and organizational behavior is still the same. Reading "Setup to Fail" paper one may remember instances in their career where they setup somebody for failure. It is truly empowering. For seasoned managers, it may offer some fresh insights into why people behave the way they do. All in all, good purchase.

As a new manager, I'm looking for resources to help me better manage my team. This is a great book that provides some really great advice. Nothing in here is earth-shattering -- but it's great, standard material that will help a new manager blaze a path forward.
