About the Author
Production designer Hans Bacher is acknowledged as one of the legends in animation film design. His work with Walt Disney Feature Animation, Richard Williams, and Steven Spielberg's Amblimation saw him creating the production design for such historic films as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Balto, Hercules, Fantasia 2000, Little Match Girl, Brother Bear, Lilo and Stitch and Mulan amongst others. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has been honored with the Golden Camera Award and an Annie for outstanding individual achievement in Production Design. He now lives in Singapore were he teaches as Nanyang Technological University.

Would be better with more instruction

[[VIDEOID:e7d0ea4d032b11646b77a1a0642d45f3]]I'm a big fan of Hans Bacher's earlier book called Dream Worlds: Production Design for Animation, an instructional book on production design and composition for film. Hans Bacher has worked in the animation industry for years, including for companies such as Disney when they were still big on their traditional animation.

This new book Sketchbook: Composition Studies for Film is actually more of a sketchbook rather than an instructional book. There are a couple of tips on composition but do not get this book for the instructions because they are few and far in between.

The sketches featured are seemingly random but they may look familiar because they are composition and framing techniques used for films, not for any specific films though. They look like they were drawn from traditional media. They are, as the book title suggest, studies on composition. Many just use black, grey and white to block out shapes and characters. Even though the art may look very simple in execution with just a few lines and areas of colours, the composition are very well thought out and looks effective. You don't have to go into the details to make good art, as one of the tips in the book says.

It's a beautiful artbook but I wished they had been more instructions. This book works well as a reference where you can flip to any page to just get some visual ideas.

Anyway, you should definitely get his earlier book Dream Worlds if you haven't. And if you want to learn more about composition, I highly recommend Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers by Marcos Mateu-Mestre, another expert in this field.

So-so book, with some nice cartoon drawings. Book is not terribly well thought out, written, or designed, though. Text and images rarely explain or work with each other. Gets rather repetitive.

SKETCHES ONLY... there's not a lot of meat to this book in terms of writing- but there's lots to look at. If you like the cover and want to see many more pictures like it, for reference and insight into solid composition for art, this is a nice book. But it's rather one-dimensional vs Mr. Bacher's first book. Great work in here, I love his sketches.

Stirring Memoir

This book reads like a memoir, heavy on the narrative, light on dialog. Madison suffers through a childhood of neglect and poor examples of adulthood, which lead her into a lifestyle that she vowed would never be hers. We watch her struggle and suffer silently with the choices and decisions she makes, but also her desire to lead a different, better life.

She enters several relationships that are destructive to herself esteem, but give her the financial stability she needs after enduring a childhood of poverty. It is not a sunshine and roses story. She makes an effort to lead a traditional life that ultimately backfires in her face. Throughout the book you are rooting for her to find peace and stability on her own.

The writing in this book is well-organized and stirring. There are some editing issues, but nothing that pulls you out of the story. All in all it was a fascinating insight into the world, mindset and choices of a woman who is struggling to find herself and her indepence. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Following in the footsteps of family history

I would never have known about this book if it wasnt for my friend teena sloan hendricks posting it on her fb . i had to tell her thank you, because Madison blu you put your all into this book and I know it couldn't have been easy. To have the strength to keep going in the beginning years when you had parents who were the type like yours and be surrounded by so many who made you feel unloved. Your grandmother no matter the time and distance always had love for you and glad you realized that. As I read this book it made me think about how hard so many kids have it. It like as a single parent it wasn't easy but I put my best into it and then you have a kid like Madison who only wanted to be what she considered to be normal,and she looks for that in all the wrong places and ways but the comfort zone can feel so good. I love the ending.

About the Author

Dr. Wesley Duewel has given himself to the cause of missions for more than 70 years.  Following ministry in India for nearly 25 years, he served as president of OMS International and is now President Emeritus. Every chapter of this book leaves you burning inside and on your knees in prayer. Ablaze for God is an appropriate title. I will be reading it many times over. Wesley Duewel certainly knows how to fan the flame. The spirituality that he presents here is what we need desperately, and what I want to embody more than anything. If I could only have the Bible and one other book the rest of my life, it would be this book. READ IT!!!

MUST READ - IF YOU ARE A LEADER - YOU MUST BE A READER

ABLAZE FOR GOD by Wesley L. Duewel is excellent! I read one chapter every morning to start my morning devotion (before I begin my personal prayer and study in the Lord). This is very difficult because I want to continue reading. ABLAZE FOR GOD is insightful and God's mighty hand is on this brother. Each chapter (short powerful preaching) is filled with the character of the Holy Ghost. There is no way anyone can read this and not be changed. There is no way in heaven or earth that after reading even one page of ABLAZE FOR GOD, that you do not jump up and down and cry out to Jehovah hallelujah. I love Jesus, I love God, I love the Holy Ghost. You will be changed! You will be inspired. Brother Duewel uses very few words to convey what God has put in his soul. Not one word is wasted. You will high light every word, every verb, and every noun. You will read, and re-read with renewed thirst for the God of my salvation. You will run to you children screaming about what you read last. You will quote chapter and verse and those who know you will know that you spent time with the Almighty. The chapters on "YOUR PRAYER" pages 211 to 247 will convict, encourage, and inspire your prayer time. HE [The Holy Ghost] will increase, as you decrease. Pray and read, pray and read, GET FAT off of ABLAZE FOR GOD! Leaders, please READ! Leasers, please read, if you desire to lead your ministry, to God! ***I highly recommend ABLAZE FOR GOD.***

The Best of the Best

If you have seen any of my other reviews you will realize that Wesley L. Duewel is one of my favorite authors on the subject of the ministry of the Holy Spirit within the life of the Christian. Of all of Duewel's books, I like this one the best. Of all of the sections of this book, I like his discussion of power the best. His sketches of the ministry of the Holy Spirit within the lives of John Wesley, Charles G. Finney, and Duncan Campbell have inspired me in my faith journey as few other books ever have.
